Pathways for Industrial Decarbonization SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) Under Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC)

Updated: 1 day ago

Bangladesh’s industrial future is being shaped by a quiet but urgent challenge: how to keep its vast network of small and medium enterprises competitive in a world that increasingly demands low-carbon production. These businesses power jobs, exports, and local economies, yet remain heavily dependent on fossil-fuel-based electricity, outdated machinery, and fragmented support systems locking in both high emissions and rising costs. As global markets tighten climate requirements, this gap risks leaving thousands of firms and the livelihoods they sustain behind.

This work uncovers a practical pathway forward, grounded in real factory data and sector-level analysis across key industries. It shows that meaningful emission cuts are not only possible but economically viable if the right mix of technology, financing, and institutional coordination is in place. By shifting from isolated factory upgrades to cluster-wide solutions and accessible financing models, it reframes decarbonization as an opportunity: to lower costs, strengthen resilience, and position Bangladesh’s SMEs for a rapidly changing global economy.
