Mangroves Under Pressure: A Rapid Reality Check
Indonesia is at the centre of the world's mangrove loss update, recording the largest absolute decline on Earth 2,448 km² lost between 1985 and 2023. Yet the same country also holds the world's greatest restoration opportunity, with 2,032 km² still suitable for recovery and the potential to restore 80.71 MtCO₂e of blue carbon. This is more than an environmental statistic it is a defining climate decision. As aquaculture expansion, coastal development and rising climate risks converge, every hectare restored strengthens coastal protection, safeguards fisheries, and locks away carbon that would otherwise accelerate global warming.
The latest 2026 mangrove statistics, Global Mangrove Watch data, and rapid assessment of mangrove restoration reveal a striking reality: the places experiencing the greatest ecological pressure are often those with the greatest recovery potential. Indonesia's mangroves support an estimated 20.27 billion fish, crabs and shrimp, yet increasing pressure from food production threatens these ecosystems faster than they can recover. The message is immediate and unmistakable protecting existing mangroves while restoring degraded coastlines is one of the fastest, most cost-effective climate and biodiversity actions available today.
