Bangladesh Must Prepare for a Two - Chokepoint Energy Shock

Bangladesh’s energy challenge is no longer simply about securing affordable fuel it is about rethinking national resilience in an era where geopolitical conflict, global logistics, and economic stability are increasingly intertwined. This Strategic Insight argues that the simultaneous vulnerability of the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb exposes a deeper structural reality: countries dependent on imported fossil fuels remain vulnerable to disruptions beyond their control. Rather than treating energy crises as temporary market disturbances, it calls for a fundamental shift toward strategic risk governance where energy security, food systems, trade competitiveness, fiscal stability, and foreign policy are understood as parts of a single interconnected resilience framework.
Looking beyond immediate crisis management, the paper presents a long-term vision of energy sovereignty built on renewable power, diversified supply chains, transparent governance, and proactive diplomacy. The proposed transformation is not merely an energy transition but a new strategic framework for national resilience, positioning sustainability as a cornerstone of economic security and geopolitical preparedness. By reframing clean energy as an instrument of competitiveness and sovereign decision-making, the analysis contributes to the broader debate on the future of energy security, strategic framework for energy resilience, Bangladesh energy transition 2030 - 2050, geopolitical energy risk governance, and energy sovereignty for sustainable development offering policymakers and scholars a blueprint for navigating an increasingly uncertain global order.
